A blazing forest fire has been reportedly scorching the slopes of Mt. Agung, Baliā€™s highest volcano in Karangasem, East Bali since Saturday. Initially covering 15 hectares, the fire has continued to expand.

Ida Bagus Arimbawa, Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency, said the wildfire also hit the Abang and Kubu districts. Firefighters have attempted to extinguish the fire, but reports yesterday said they were only able to make a barrier to prevent it from spreading downhill since the wind was too strong and the climate too dry.

Apparently there were at least about 20 hotspots on Agungā€™s slopes since the report update yesterday. Since September this year, hundreds of hectares have burned on Agung.

In addition to human activity, the fires are also believed to be caused from the prolonged drought. Where is rainy season when we need it, really?
