In Bali, some steal money from ATMs, while others camera equipment, but some thieves go big and go for sand. A “sea sand thief” was fined IDR5 million (USD411) in Jembrana, western Bali.

In true Bali-style, he also had to partake in an “apology ceremony” in some temples where he confessed his crime to the community and said sorry for what he did. He also had to say he wouldn’t repeat the offense (that’s what they all say).

No, he wasn’t putting Bali’s biggest sandcastle into the works. The thief was illegally mining.

“In our village there had been awig awig or customary rules, which prohibit the sea sand mining. We are trying to apply it strictly, so our beaches are not damaged due to illegal mining,” said head of Yehembang Kangin village, I Gede Suardika.

The thief was made when he was caught mining on Saturday night, when dozens of villagers reportedly did a raid in Yehembang and Yehembang Kangin villages. Two trucks allegedly drove away before they could be apprehended.

The best part is that the thief has one week to pay the fine and his car is being held as collateral for a 75% payment.
